VolkerBrooks was commissioned to supply, fabricate and deliver 190 tonnes of twin Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) wailings, as part of the Berth 9 extension project at the Port of Felixstowe - the UK's largest container port.
Our in house steel fabrication team prepped and butt welded 66 50mm thick end plates, with the biggest plate being 1200mmx750mm, onto 33 box sections. All end plates were pre heated to a minimum of 100 degrees and ultrasonically tested for defects after welding. All fillet welds were also subject to a 20% random magnetic partial test (MPI). VolkerBrooks received a 100% pass rate with no re-work required.
The twin RHS wailings were delivered to site six weeks in advance of the installation date and installed, with no issues, over a four week period.
As part of the wailing package, VolkerBrooks was also commissioned to supply, fabricate and deliver 60 tonnes of tie rod bearing plates, to be used as washer plates for tie rod ends.
Some of these completed sets weighed over 250kg. To ensure site safety all lifting points were MPI tested, with the heaviest being sent for load testing by an independent third party.
All works were carried out to BS EN 1090-1 in accordance with CE marking to execution class 3.
