VolkerBrooks constructs new bridge over Swincombe River

Recent

VolkerBrooks successfully completed the construction of a new 12.2m steel and timber composite bridge for Devon County Council, to span over the river Swincombe in Dartmoor National Park.

Appointed by Beaver Bridges, VolkerBrooks constructed the bridge using a steel substructure made of two pre-chambered beams with angle iron bracings. Once fabricated all items were galvanised.

The bridges steel components were then assembled in our in-house joinery department, where a team of highly skilled joiners fitted Ekki timber posts and handrails with C24 Redwood used for deck boards complete with three anti slip inserts.

Site location and delivery presented a challenge for this project. VolkerBrooks delivered the bridge in kit form, which enabled the installation team to receive the bridge in sections for construction on site. To ensure all components fitted correctly a trial assembly was completed at our Morecambe facility before being broken down and delivered to site.

The bridge was received by Devon County Council three days ahead of schedule and installed with no problems.
